MDS Pharma Services choose Labnotes as the electronic laboratory notebook for their global bioanalytical operation
MDS Pharma Services is a provider of innovative early stage drug development solutions from discovery through Phase IIa. They offer Quality On Time™ through a full spectrum of world-class discovery, preclinical and clinical resources and expertise, strategically located around the world, to meet the needs of the global pharmaceutical, biotechnology and generic industries. MDS have bioanalytical facilities in Lincoln Nebraska USA, Montreal Canada and Fehraltorf Switzerland. Labnotes has been implemented in all of these facilities and runs as a web client and in a Citrix environment. Chad Briscoe, Director of Bioanalysis, presented at the 2009 APS meeting on how they are implementing Labnotes in their bioanalytical laboratories.
Laboratory Data Solution has worked with MDS to help them identify the most time and cost effective way of rolling out Labnotes. Both companies agree that a controlled implementation of key processes is the best way to achieve a successful end result, while getting the buy-in of the scientists who will be using the system. Chad Briscoe stated; “I think it’s essential to have a rollout strategy with defined goals, with critical time points associated with each goal. For example rolling out the implementation by process – reference standards, then control matrix, then all equipment calibration, etc. and finally Study based processes.” As part of the implementation process the opinion of users was canvassed to ensure that they were happy with the product and the processes to be implemented. These were also presented by Chad in his APS presentation; examples of these are included below:
“Allows me to focus on the extraction rather than my documentation” Thanh Nguyen, Sr. Scientist “I don’t have to re-verify the same calculation multiple times; it will revolutionize our Bioanalytical documentation” Cathy James, QC Analyst “I was surprised it was so compatible with our processes right out of the box” Tom Johnson, Sr. Scientist “My handwriting will never be a QC/QA Finding Again, and no more playing “Find the Notebook!” Lee Winchester, Method Development Scientist “We wouldn’t have to deal with binder templates anymore!” Erik Pearson, Bioanalytical Chemist “I was so impressed with its ease of use and the practicality. The instrumentation portion of it is amazing and it is the ultimate time saving tool. My daily output will increase significantly just by implementing it. I would think similar performance would be achievable across the lab” Ridha Nachi, Instrument Scientist and Team Leader Chad and his colleagues are already reaping the benefits of moving from a paper to an electronic system with Labnotes. As outlined above, MDS expect to save a significant amount of money, improve quality and reputation by using Labnotes; Chad suggested that they would save $4,000,000 in three years in his presentation.
